- Validation and defaults
Three severities before calculation; default production steps, transport and disposal so a partial product is calculable; a Data issues page that lists what keeps each draft from completing, with the fix.
- Transport, steps and packaging levels
Add missing transport links fills every supplier with no transport leg; a % share of volume on each route out of a fork and to each consumption country; default steps finish the product at its own weight; packaging levels down to one unit, and returnable packaging amortised over its uses.
- Co-products by mass
A step output marked as a co-product takes its mass share of the impact and is listed with its source products; a by-product takes none, and a large one is flagged. Your own co-products and by-products go into other recipes from the picker, their figures following the source product, and volume reports count each one once.
- Circular inputs
Mark a raw material as a co-product (its allocated share) or a residue (cut off, only its own transport and processing count). Reports show the circular share of input mass and the impact avoided compared with the conventional ingredient each line replaces, beside the footprint and never subtracted from it.

Append-only snapshots with preview, compare and restore; up to 500 per product.
Report
Product-level deliverables and corporate footprints from the same records, versioned and stamped so a figure can be reproduced later.

Registry
Suppliers share impact data for what they sell, and choose who can see it. Their customers ask for it item by item, use it in their models, or keep it as a record.

Methods
Three versioned methodologies selectable per calculation; results pinned to the methodology and dataset version they were computed on.
Datasets
Named on every report line. ecoinvent available as a bundle where a customer requires it. HESTIA data carries its CC BY 4.0 attribution wherever its numbers appear.
Data quality
A computed data-quality rating by the PEF DQR method, not a third-party verification. Assurance levels from self-declared to ISO-certified on every primary record; a supplier's figure your team types in reads 3rd-party verified only with their verification statement or PCF certificate attached.
Infrastructure
Cloud-native on AWS in one EU region, private-subnet workloads, TLS required on every database connection, continuous threat detection, keyless CI/CD, audit trail, and a customer activity log kept seven years. The product and Registry databases can be restored to any point in the last 35 days, and a weekly copy is kept in a second EU region under a lock that stops anyone deleting it early. No SOC 2 or ISO 27001 attestation yet.
A PACT conformant solution
Sustained's PACT endpoint passed the PACT initiative's conformance testing on Technical Specifications v3 in September 2026, so product carbon footprints published from Sustained can be read by any other PACT conformant system. PACT is hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Footprint exchange is part of the corporate GHG add-on.
About the PACT initiative
Farm-gate data from HESTIA
Where an ingredient is grown matters more than anything downstream, so national farm averages come from HESTIA, the open agricultural data platform run by the University of Oxford: 161 ingredients across 43 countries, release 1.1 of 10 March 2026, validated aggregates only. What happens to those farm inputs, and everything after the farm gate, is calculated on Sustained's own reference data, so a HESTIA ingredient stays comparable with every other one in your report.
